Twice a year at both Christmas and her Birthday we would also go thru her toys with her. We would donate what she didn't play with or outgrew to make room for the new toys. A was always involved because I felt it important for her to learn that it's ok to let go of things so others less fortunate can enjoy them. We do keep things that are sentimental to her and they go in the attic or in a box in her closet.
Tomorrow a local family is picking up a small Step 2 desk that we have had since she was 2. A is fine with us selling it. There is a nice big girl desk upstairs complete with a computer. However as I sat on the living room floor and wiped it down with a Lysol wipe I was in tears.
Why did this desk cause me to break down?
She hasn't used it in almost a year! Ever since she was given her new desk from Grandma and Papa!
But here I sit, on the floor, crying.....

....Over a little plastic desk.

Actually, I really get the crying. We are very sentimental here, too, and I have had to make some tough choices with stuff that our children have used.
Keep in mind that your child's past does not go with the desk. I think it's okay to keep a few select reminders, provided you have the storage space. That's what we have done.
Good for you for doing the gleaning slowling and over time.
We struggle with this in our home, too. For part of our lives, moving around with Hubby's job, that helped reduce the detritus with each move.
Recently we had a faux-move, all the floors were replaced and so everything had to be moved out of each room temporarily. A forced sort of sorts.
Congrats on recognizing the need and going for it. Cheering you on! Barbara
Thank you so much for your comment Barbara! It really did surprise me that day, but now that it's gone it's nice to have my dining room actually be a dining room!
I hope my daughter takes this with her when she is older, it's ok to get rid of the physical because you do always have the memories :)
I linked this post in one of mine - titled "Other Attachments".
Thanks! Barbara
